True Faux Finishes

Faux is the French term meaning false. "Faux finishing" generally refers to the creation of the illusion of another (often more costly) material than the underlying one,
usually achieved through skilled manipulation of paint.
John's training in academic realism along with a Master
of Fine Art degree enable him to replicate of a variety of natural materials.

The sectional oak mantle and columns pictured below
were provided to him as raw wood. He transformed the components into a faux polished marble for a client in their requested color scheme prior to installation in their den.

Specialty Illustration Projects

John has tackled many different types of unique projects from repairs in finishes due to water leaks to designing and painting murals to small scale refined requests uniquely suited to the needs of a client.

Below is the clock face he designed and painted for Art Heberer, an exquisite craftsman and good friend who builds 18th Century Lancaster County Pennsylvania reproduction furniture.

17th Century Lancaster County Tall Clock

Woodworking by Art Heberer, Roanoke, VA

It was received as a bare metal circular gear behind a primed metal facing with numbers stamped on it. It was transformed into a faux antique clock face that complements the beautiful woodworking.

Repairs to Existing Finishes

Water damage
is an unfortunate malady many homeowners have to one day face. It can be especially discouraging if an existing decorative finish is damaged.

Often the original finisher is unknown or has moved out of the region. John is very comfortable drawing on his artistic repertoire to merge repairs into the original finish in a seamless way, making the restoration work virtually invisible.
